Have you ever been away with friends, having a lovely time, and then you notice that your child is starting to act out? Maybe getting a little aggressive with his friends, or becoming rude or whiny?
This has happened to me many times. And I can often feel embarrassed that my child is behaving that way in front of friends (especially as I’m a ‘Parenting Instructor’!), or I might be irritated that my lovely time is being interrupted, or I might just feel tired and can’t be bothered to deal with it as I’m on holiday too!
If this sounds at all familiar, today’s video is about how to quickly, and enjoyably turn the situation around in 10 mins.
So if you start to notice that your child is starting to play / get antsy and isn’t responding to reason, I find it’s best to remove them from the situation and take them to a separate room where you can spend some one-on-one time together.
In this instance, whilst we were away with friends, I took my 7 year old daughter into our bedroom and, because I wasn’t in the mood to listen to a tantrum or tears, I gave her a pillow and asked her to show me how angry she was feeling by bashing me and my pillow. She LOVED it! So we started a fabulous PILLOW FIGHT! She would whack me and I would try to run away or fall dramatically to the floor. And then I would try to whack her – not hard and often pretending to not be able to get her.
This is a Power Reversal Game where we give the power to the child. The child becomes the competent one and the adult becomes the bumbling, ‘weaker’ one. It’s perfect to counter any powerless or weak feelings your child may be feeling in certain situations. It’s also high energy and very physically connecting. As well as great fun!
I found that my daughter’s anger turned quickly to laughter and we had a great time playing together for about 10-15 mins. At the end of that time, she felt reconnected with me, and in a much happier state to then go back and resume playing with her friends. That short amount of time was all she needed to ‘fill her emotional cup’ and last her through the rest of the weekend.
